Barbelles Ladies Only Training brings women together of all fitness levels and backgrounds to train and enjoy functional fitness style workouts in events, training days and training camps throughout the year.

‘Have fun, make friends, get fit’ is a perfect way to describe everything we do at Barbelles. It is our ultimate goal to help grow the fitness community by bringing women together in a friendly positive environment.

We thrive on meeting amazing women and watching them empower and inspire each other as this is exactly how our friendship became & how Barbelles came about.

We never take ourselves too seriously & like to think that we are always approachable, sharing the stories of our days competing, providing great quality coaching & answering any questions related to training/lifestyle.

How it all started

Barbelles started with an idea of getting some ladies together to train with us for the day. We used to travel miles from our home towns to meet up regularly to train together to help push one another and have fun. We loved our training sessions and felt that there are so many other women who’d love this too . That’s when Barbelles Training was born. We held our first training day at Reebok CrossFit Reading consisting of some weightlifting, gymnastics and a Team WOD. It sold out in a few days with over 30 women joining us for the day. 

We realised then that we had created something special. A platform for women to let their hair down; enjoy a non-judgemental training session and to be uplifted by positivity, laughs and forming friendships. 

This extended onto running our amazing CrossFit competitions which would turn your hairs on end with the amount of love and support of the competitors and we went on to run our first training camp to CrossFit Mallorca in 2017. 

We are thankful for the CrossFit community for giving us the opportunity to meet one another and giving us the resourced  to provide services for women of all shapes sizes and ages; to do the same.

My love for CrossFit was found in January 2012 when I saw some YouTube videos of amazing women doing incredible things. Their bodies were ripped and lean and they were doing skills that I could only have dreamt to do. I worked as Group Exercise Instructor at David Lloyd in Oxford at the time and I thought I was super fit as I taught 20 Spinning, Body Combat and Boy Pump classes a week but the truth was I was doing exercise within my comfort zone and soon reached a plateau. I strived to look skinny and be a size 0! There were no CrossFit boxes in the area at the time, so I made the journey over to CrossFit Reading and I have never looked back. 

My athletic career went from strength to strength as I focussed on getting stronger, learning new skills and realising that fitness is about what your body can do and not what it looks like. I went on to compete at the European Regionals in 2013, 2014 and 2015 and other competitions around Europe. In 2017, I qualified for the English Championships in Olympic Weightlifting where I won Silver. I also competed at the British Championships that year too, narrowly missing out on the podium.

Over the years, I’ve met some of my best friends who all inspire me to be fitter, stronger and happier. Each training day, training camp and competition we run at Barbelles, I continue to be blown away by the incredible women I meet and the love and support the community brings. Helping people to get fit, make friends and have fun whilst learning new skills and getting stronger and less body conscious is truly the most rewarding thing in the world. I have to pinch myself often to remind me that I get to do this for a job every single day! How blessed am I?

Gina Turner

My life has revolved around sport from an early age, with tennis initially being my main hobby. I became totally obsessed with fitness during my late teens and for many years I hit the gym every day completing the same routine day in day out. Not because I enjoyed it, but because I wanted to look a certain way. Looking back, I had a completely unhealthy perception of health, fitness & body image and it wasn’t until I found CrossFit that I realised this!!

What I love about CrossFit is that nobody is bothered what you look like, they are more interested in mastering certain movements and skills, setting new personal records and moving faster. I have a much healthier attitude towards life now. I LOVE training and I have made amazing friends through the CrossFit community. 

I started CrossFit in 2011 whilst training a CrossFit Tyneside and I have never looked back, I have since competed in the CrossFit European Regionals in 2013, 2014 & 2015. 

I have made the best friends through CrossFit both from competing & from travelling to different gyms around the country/world & it is this, the community that I love about Barbells, getting to meet so many amazing women from all walks of life!

Aneta Tucker

I have always loved sport and tried many disciplines, but until I found CrossFit in 2012, nothing would keep me interested enough to pursue it to any competitive level. With CrossFit it was love at the first sight. I was hooked on the variety and demands of the training and decided that this is finally the sport for me. It took me 5 years of grafting and overcoming setbacks, such as bulged disc or broken hand, to qualify for CrossFit European Regionals in 2016. I then competed at this level for two more years in 2017 and 2018 until they sadly took this stage away. I also competed at the new sanctioned events (London 2019, France 2019, Miami 2020), both as an individual and as a team. 

Aside from the excitement of competitions and the incredible variety of CrossFit training, what I love the most, is the community of amazing people and how it empowers us to become a better version of ourselves. It has completely changed how I view my body. The focus has shifted from what I look like to what I can do. I have never been more confident and healthier (both physically and mentally!) and it is mainly thanks to the positive influence of the people that I am surrounded with. 

Since becoming a gym owner, competing has not been my priority, but my love for training is still the same and my love for coaching is growing even more!

Barbelles Training events encompasses everything that I love about this community and I always come away with my batteries fully re-charged and spirit uplifted.
